Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci release acoustic mini-album
19 February 2001

Young Welsh psychedelic folk rockers Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci released their first English-language album in 1999, Spanish Dance Troupe. While English just because it didn’t occur to the band to write Welsh songs for their sixth album (“At the end we realized there’s no Welsh songs on it,” front man Euros Childs told The Washington Post), it proved an international breakthrough, becoming their first domestic release for North America (apart from an earlier compilation) and earning lavish critical praise.
The quartet are working on a new LP for release this year, their 10th anniversary from beginnings in high school when Childs was just 15. But tomorrow they’ll release for North America a diminutive gem of a record, the 23 1/2 minute acoustic mini-album The Blue Trees. It came out this past October in the UK, and later in Japan, with the same track listing.
GZM laid down the entire set in eight days at Stiwdio Ofn in Anglesey. Some of it will be familiar to fans who saw the band on the road last year, when they opened their shows with acoustic sets. From delicate instrumentals featuring arpeggiated guitars, plinky piano, and violin (the title), to almost-rockers strongly evocative of early matieral from The Velvet Underground such as Candy Says (Lady Fair), to optimistic Appalachian folk (This Summer’s Been Good From The Start), and to the cinematic, haunting pump-organ of Foot And Mouth ’68, The Blue Trees, like a smooth stone in a clear pond, sinks down deep into your heart. Four bites out of five.

Rockbites ratings  5: life changing, 4: stunning, 3: captivating, 2: amusing, 1: annoying.
