Grammy Awards to honor Native American music
19 February 2001

For the first time in its 43 year history, the Grammy Awards ceremony of the USA’s National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences will specifically honor music by native Americans. The new category of Best Native American Music Album becomes the third within the field of Folk, joining Best Traditional Folk Album and Best Contemporary Folk Album. So while Native American music doesn’t yet qualify in the eyes of NARAS for the stature of, say, Polka, which garners its own field, it will nonetheless acheive far more visibility than ever before.
Nominees for Best Native American Music Album are Tribute To the Elders by Black Lodge Singers, Cheyenne Nation by Joseph Fire Crow, Veterans Song by Lakota Thunder, Peacemaker’s Journey by Joanne Shenandoah, and Gathering Of Nations Pow Wow by various artists.
The Grammys will present the Native American award live during their telecast/Webcast on Wednesday. Of course, you might also want to tune in to see the Eminem/Elton John duet, or to see former Roxy Music singer Brian Ferry compete against Barbra Streisand for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.
The NARAS honor comes three years after the establishment of the Nammys, or the Native American Music Awards. The Nammys confer awards in 25 categories of Native American music. The Best Traditional Recording last year was The First Flute by Kevin Locke Makoche, Debut Artist Of The Year was Red Earth for When Worlds Collide, and Artist Of The Year was John Trudell for his album Blue Indians. | Grammy awards | | Native American Music Awards | | winners of 3rd annual Nammys | | list of Native American music links | | top of page |
