Mastica to play first gig outside of Austin
14 February 2001
image
King Crimson drummer Pat Mastelotto’s Austin based side project Mastica (formerly known as Gum) released their debut album a year ago, titled simply ’99. It’s a percussion heavy, understated, rather minimalist affair, at times somewhat reminiscent of work by Morphine or Babe The Blue Ox or Low.
The band got together in ’98 with the help of producer/engineer Bill Munyon (Butthole Surfers, The Impossibles), who introduced Mastelotto to a pair of improvisational musicians: 40-something bassist/ cellist/ mandocellist Mark Alan Williams aka Gumby (formerly in Poi Dog Pondering), and 20-something winds player/ guitarist/ vocalist Monica Angela Champion aka Monkey (married, the two are proud parents of a daughter, Mirabel, who they say is already playing organ and bongos). Mastelotto, a founding member of ’80s band Mr. Mister and actively playing with King Crimson, has been a sessions drummer with XTC, David Sylvian, and The Rolling Stones, among others.
On 2 March Mastica play their first ever gig outside of Austin, north about two hundred miles in Dallas at Poor Davids—the venue where Crimson recorded ProjeKct 3. We’ll keep you informed of further touring plans as we learn of them. | Mastica | | Discipline Global Mobile | | interview on Livewire ezine | | discography | | CD | | top of page |
