Negativland announce reissue, new studio album 5 December 2001 Originally released in 1990 on cassette by SST, the new version is a re-edited, massively expanded 155 minute double-CD set on the band's own Seeland label. Vaughn was a fictional wannabe radio super-jockey who in 1984 temporarily took over Negativlands weekly Over The Edge radio program on Berkeley public station KPFA-FM. His Moribund Music Foundation launched two controversial shows in place of Over The Edgebemusing and even angering some fans of the surrealist/sound-collage seriestitled The California Superstation and Dick Vaughns Moribund Music of the 70s. The former was a hit-oriented AOR show, while the latter was a 70s nostalgia project which forms the core the Volume 4 LP. However, new material on the set includes pieces taped by Vaughn after his tragic death, according to the band. Negativland have also announced a new studio album titled Death Sentences Of The Polished And Structurally Weak, due early next year. The box set will include a 40+ minute CD along with a book consisting of materials found inside junked cars in automotive wrecking yards. Don Joyce, who emcees Over The Edge on KPFA these days, says the disc ...is something of a sonic departure for Negativland, being a solid electronic re-composition of abstract noise and illegible sentences from the dead. The whole project is NOT funny! On a yet-more-serious note, Negativlands Mark Hosler last month served on a panel at Duke Universitys Conference On The Public Domain, at which he delivered a 10,000 word manifesto titled Two Relationships To A Cultural Public Domain in which he lays out his philosophy on the subject.
