Laurie Anderson, John Zorn to play benefit for NYC arts recovery
11 December 2001

September’s terrorist attacks devastated the New York city arts community along with the rest of the area’s economy, directly impacting musicians, writers, visual artists, actors, and dancers.
Now a wide coalition of artists and artist groups, along with the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA), has established the New York Arts Recovery Fund (NYARF) to provide financial and other assistance to the community.
On 11 January the NYARF will host their first benefit show at the Hammerstein Ballroom at Manhattan Center titled Arts On The High Wire. Unlike most high profile benefits, this one is priced for the general public with tickets ranging from $15 to $25—although a limited number of opera box and table seats will go at donor prices. All proceeds will benefit the NYARF and, through it, NYC artists.
Performers confirmed so far include Laurie Anderson, Paul Auster, Roy Blount, Jr., Don Byron, Jim Carol, Chuck Close, Bruce Davidson, Bill Irwin, Joe Jackson, Ben Katcher, Art Spiegelman, Elizabeth Streb, Suzanne Vega, The X-ecutioners, and John Zorn, with more to be announced.
As a special tribute to his 1974 high wire walk between the Twin Towers, Philippe Petit will also appear and walk the high wire.
