27 August 2001

San Diego, California born experimental vocalist/social activist Diamanda Galás—whose last LP came out 3 1/2 years ago—has set US and European tour dates running from this Thursday through the end of November. She’ll perform work from three forthcoming albums, all tentatively set for release next year: Defixiones and La Serpenta Canta to be released together in the first half of 2002, and Insekta to be released in the second half.
Most of the upcoming tour dates will feature performances of her recent Defixiones, Will And Testament song cycle. As Galás writes on her site, the title Defixiones “...refers to the warnings engraved in lead which were placed on the graves of the dead in Greece and Asia Minor. They cautioned against moving or desecrating the corpses under threat of extreme harm...”
Galás goes on to say the work is “...dedicated to the forgotten and erased of the Armenian and Anatolian Greek genocides of 1915 and 1922.”
While in Ghent, Belgium in September, Galás will conduct a three day workshop for the Institute of the Living Voice, a vocal technique teaching project of American singer David Moss and Guy Coolen of Belgium’s Musiektheater Transparant. Other participants in the workshop will be Ustad Gulam Hassan Shagan, Cheryl Barker, Susannah Self, Tran Quang Hai, Catherine Jauniaux, and Lydia Lunch.
San Francisco chamber pop collective Bonfire Madigan, led by Madigan Shive, is slated to open for Galás at her Royce Hall performance at the University of California, Los Angeles in November.
