(As a human rights oriented Web site—we’re here to raise funds for human rights as well as to expose cutting edge pop—Rockbites occasionally brings you non-music-related stories. Here’s one.)

Mannheim, Germany based, not-for-profit, punk-centric Enough Fanzine has published the first of a three-part, firsthand report from the chaotic Group Of Eight (G8) Summit meeting in Genoa, Italy last month.
The summit, attended by the heads of state from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the UK, and the United States (and which, by its own account, achieved 'few outcomes') was met by an extraordinary level of protest against the closed nature of the meetings—which was met in turn by draconian suppression by the Italian police resulting in injury and death of demonstrators.
Human rights advocacy group Amnesty International wrote last month “...numerous reports from various sources, including witness and victim accounts and photographic evidence, presented a disturbing picture of widespread abuses and violations of international human rights standards perpetrated against nonviolent demonstrators and others by members of the State Police, Carabinieri and Guardia di Finanza.”
The Italian government has said they will pay for the roughly US$5 million in property damages resulting from the clashes.
Enough Fanzine contributor 'magnus' writes “...the Italian activists are smoking pot ALL the time. ALL the damn time. Even in toughest riots in [Genoa], they took a smoking break regularly. It was pretty annoying for me, as I regularly came (passively) stoned from the discussions...
“We were a bit pissed by the local anarchists, because they didn't seem to have prepared something, so we had to built up a simple anarchist infrastructure in a few days to coordinate the efforts of the several international anarchist groups. This was almost an impossible task, as it always ended up in total chaos and sometimes even fights. But at the beginning of the g8 meeting most people agreed to a certain strategy and the initial tensions between the resident anarchists (who provided really tasty vegan food) and the international groups were gone....” | Enough-Fanzine report | | Genoa G8 Summit | | G8 commentary by Oxfam | | G8 news links | | top of page |
