Seven bands line up for 3rd landmine removal benefit
24 August 2001

As we first reported in early June, Xiu Xiu (pronounced 'shoe shoe') front man Jamie Stewart organized a series of three California benefit concerts for landmine removal after he returned from a trip to Vietnam. There he had witnessed the very high incidence of mutilation, especially among children, resulting from landmines planted over the past few decades.
The last of the three benefit shows is now set for 9 September at The Gaslighter Theatre in Campbell, California starting at 6 pm. Bands confirmed are Deerhoof, Electro Group, Jobbers, Mia Doi Todd, Quazar And The Bamboozled, Tiny Bird Mouth, and Xiu Xiu. All proceeds will go to the non-profit Manchester, UK based Mines Advisory Group (MAG).
Founded in 1991, MAG teaches people how to clear landmines and bombs from populated areas throughout the world, focusing on the Laos-Vietnam border region. They estimate that active landmines are planted in 70 countries today, resulting in tens of thousands of civilian deaths and mutilations each year. Most victims are children.
In 1997, as a member organization of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL), MAG received the Nobel Peace Prize along with ICBL director Jody Williams. | US State Dept info on landmines | | Mines Advisory Group | | ICBL | | Gaslighter Theatre | | Ibopa (previous incarnation of Xiu Xiu) | | top of page |
