23 August 2001

Dutch pop masters Johan (named after soccer star Johan Cruijff, as fellow Hollanders Bettie Serviert named themselves after Tennis star Bettie Stove) cross the water next month for a single show at the CMJ festival in New York city on 14 September. It comes in the midst of a massive Netherlands tour for their second album, Pergola (named after a city in northeast Italy). The tour runs from this Saturday through the end of the year.
Johan’s CMJ show is at the Acme Underground starting at 9:45 with Daryll-Ann (also from Holland), Bright, Moviola, and The Count Me Outs.
Johan released their self-titled debut LP five years ago in The Netherlands, picked up a few months later by SpinArt for the US. Pergola, out since April at home, hits US stores in January on Dutch label Excelsior.
Johan are a quintet: Jacco de Greeuw on vocals, guitars, keyboards; Diederik Nomden on guitars, keyboards, vocals; Maarten Kooijman on guitar; Diets Dijkstra on bass; and Wim Kwakman on drums and loops. They play pure pop in the tradition of Big Star, Matthew Sweet, and Teenage Fanclub.
