London Tibetan Freedom Concert postponed indefinitely
14 August 2001

Late last week the organizers of the upcoming 2001 London edition of the nearly-annual Tibetan Freedom Concert series announced that they must postpone it “...due to unexpected scheduling complications and logistical issues. We will take this time to continue our political work and to transfer the energy generated in the planning of the London event to an alternative event to be announced at a later date.”
The concert, previously set for 15 September in London’s Brockwell Park, was to be the second this year—a small one took place in Japan in May. In July organizers had confirmed The Beastie Boys, Morcheeba, Pulp, and Joe Strummer for the London concert, hoping to reveal the full lineup last week. Among others, Beastie Boy Adam Yauch had invited Brit pop star Robbie Williams, hoping to draw a wider audience.
The official Website continues “To all the fans who waited so eagerly for this opportunity to show their support for the Tibetan cause, we would like to encourage you to stay involved. This is a critical time for the people of Tibet; now, more than ever, they need your help. The Milarepa Fund, Free Tibet Campaign, and Students for a Free Tibet offer numerous ways to participate in this worthy cause. ”
The Tibetan Freedom Concerts, whose mission is to raise awareness about Tibet, also raise money for The Milarepa Fund, which, in their own words, is “...an international organization that supports the Tibetan people“'”s nonviolent struggle to regain their freedom.” It was founded with money earned from two songs off The Beastie Boys’ Ill Communication album. | Tibetan Freedom Concert | | The Milarepa Fund | | The Beastie Boys | | Free Tibet DVD | | top of page |
