IUMA Web site resurrected by Vitaminic

Milan, Italy based Internet music distributor Vitaminic yesterday announced the purchase and resurrection of the Internet Underground Music Archive (IUMA) Web site. US-based music download site eMusic.com had purchased the very popular IUMA in 1999, then last year—struggling with finances—unceremoniously got rid of the IUMA staff and cancelled its services. The site remained online but accepted no new artists or updates to existing artist Web pages. It also cancelled all merchandise programs and suspended its affiliate program. According to Vitaminic, hundreds of artists submitted Web pages during the dark time (12 January to 5 April 2001), and never heard back.
    On 23 March of this year Vitaminic purchased the IUMA. They have re-hired its core staff, started accepting new artists, resumed artist, fan, and affiliate services, and have restarted CD sales, newsletters, bulletin boards, IUMA radio, and more.
    Two students at the University of California, Santa Cruz first launched the IUMA way back in 1993 to distribute and publicize their own demo tapes and those of friends. The service quickly grew to host more than 25,000 independent artists. The IUMA is now based in Redwood City, California.
