[updated 5 April 2001]

Starting this Saturday, San José, California experimental quintet Xiu Xiu (they took their name from Joan Chen’s 1998 film Xiu Xiu: The Sent-Down Girl) play a string of five weekend shows in northern and southern California. Of note will be the First Annual Silicon Valley Brownout concert (commemorating the state’s ongoing power woes), an all acoustic evening at The Fishbowl in Sunnyvale on 14 April with Xiu Xiu playing cover songs. The Fishbowl is a weekly show for 18-and-unders only, sponsored by the City of Sunnyvale as a safe place for teens on weekend nights.
Xiu Xiu is led by singer/ songwriter/ multi-instrumentalist Jamie Stewart, and grew out of his previous bands, the critically acclaimed Ibopa and Ten In The Swear Jar.
The new lineup played their first gig this past September at Portland, Oregon’s NXNW festival, joined by keyboards player/percussionist Brandon Jay aka Quazar (of LA’s Quazar And The Bamboozled). Xiu Xiu now includes former TITSJ members Don Dias and Cory McCulloch, along with new members Lauren Andrews and Yvonne Chen. The band have recorded an album’s worth of material, with a song here and there popping up on compilations. As for a debut LP... stay tuned.
