27 April 2001

Icelandic post rock/noise/psychedelic quartet Sigur Rós, hailing from the same galactic quadrant as such acts as Cocteau Twins, Radiohead, Mogwai, and Godspeed You Black Emperor!, start a very brief US/Canada tour tomorrow at the Coachella Music & Arts Festival in Indio, California. The critically acclaimed band, on their first-ever visit to the US, will play just four more dates before heading back to Iceland for a to-be-announced homecoming show.
Sigur Rós’ second studio album, and their first released domestically for the US and Canada, is Ágætis Byrjun (English: An OK Start). It shows up early next month on Play It Again (PIAS) records; although it’s been out since August 2000 in the UK and Europe on Fat Cat, and since 1999 on Bad Taste in Iceland and Denmark. Sung in Icelandic, the band’s Web site provides the original lyrics but not translations.
Here are the US/Canada performance dates

April
28 - Indio, CA (Coachella Festival at the Indio Polo Field)

May
1 - Los Angeles (John Anson Ford Theatre)
2 - San Francisco (The Fillmore)
  4 - Toronto (Palais Royal)
  6 - Chicago (Park West)
8 - New York city (Irving Plaza)
