Farm Aid, the annual benefit concert founded in 1985 by Neil Young, John Mellencamp, and Willie Nelson, takes a break from its traditional location in Bristow, Virginia this year. Organizers have announced that the 2001 Farm Aid concert will take place in Noblesville, Indiana (just north of Indianapolis) at the Verizon Wireless Music Center on 29 September. No artist lineups yet, but we’ll keep you posted.
In addition, Nelson has revealed that he’ll be hosting the first benefit 10K run for the Farm Aid foundation on 21 October in Austin. Events will include a three-day expo, a competitive 10K run, a 5K 'fun' walk and run, and a free post-race concert by Nelson for the participants. Registration costs $30 in advance or $40 if you pay on arrival. You can get more information from the 10K run Web site.
Young, Mellencamp, and Nelson began Farm Aid in 1985 “...to raise public awareness about the plight of the American family farmer and to provide assistance to those families whose livelihoods depend on agriculture.” Recently they’ve taken a more political role—in November Farm Aid organized a letter-writing/emailing campaign to encourage the US Environmental Protection Agency to deny retroactive approval of the genetically modified StarLink brand of corn. Nelson has been personally active in supporting laws that favor organic farmers.
Nelson, who turns 68 next week, releases the album Rainbow Connection in June. Fortunately We’re Not In Control, a 'book of wisdom' co-written with 47 year old, eldest daughter Lana and with Kinky Friedman, is due from Random House this coming January. Daughter Amy, 27, appeared last year on the soundtrack to Billy Bob Thornton’s psychological thriller The Gift with her stunning song In Case We Die. | 10K run | | Farm Aid | | Willie Nelson | | top of page |
