On eve of tour, Robert Pollard declines award
23 April 2001

Robert Pollard, 43 year old founder, songwriter, and vocalist for Dayton, Ohio’s Brit-tinged neo-psychedelic indie legends Guided By Voices, has respectfully turned down a Lifetime Achievement Award for which he was recently nominated by the Dayton Music Hall of Fame. Pollard, “flattered to be considered” to join the ranks of The Ohio Players, Slave, and The Osborne Brothers, pointed out that he’s, well, not dead yet.
A spokesperson said that Pollard “...feels it’s premature to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award as he’s still growing as an artist and his best work is still ahead of him.”
The band’s 16-track Isolation Drills, produced by Robert Schnapf (Beck, Foo Fighters, Elliott Smith) and released earlier this month, is the band’s most mature album to date. That’s mature as in cohesively-expressing-what-they-intended-artistically, as opposed to mature as in hackneyed-and-lame—the fate of the work of all too many artists as they age. Isolation Drills is a great album, whose songs are as accessible & comfortable as they are interesting, pretty, energizing, and strong. Ex-GBV member Tobin Sprout guests on piano, while singer/songwriter Elliott Smith contributes piano and organ.
