Joey Ramone dies
16 April 2001

Joey Ramone (Jeffrey Hyman), vocalist for extraordinarily influential New York punk legends Ramones from 1974 through 1996, has died at age 49. On Sunday the band’s artistic director Arturo Vega confirmed the death, which followed Hyman’s hospitalization in New York city last month for lymphoma. Hyman’s family was at his bedside.
Together with The Stooges from Ann Arbor, Michigan, the Queens, NY quartet, founded by Hyman at age 22, inspired the UK’s punk movement launched by The Sex Pistols and The Clash in 1975/76—whose repercussions are still echoing today.
Ramones won and kept an avid cult following across more than two decades, but never hit the US top 40. Following their breakup five years ago, Joey Ramone conducted interviews and wrote for such online publications as Addicted To Noise. In 1999 the four original members got together for some in-store performances to promote a 58-track, 2-CD compilation album.
Joey Ramone continued to perform sporadically with a variety of backing bands until recently, and worked on a solo album which was never released.
The Ramones Web site has posted a memorial. | New York Times story | | Ramones | | bio | | discography | | top of page |
