The 6ths return after five years with second LP
8 September 2000

The 6ths, an experimental side project from New York based multi-instrumentalist/composer Stephin Merrit—the man behind The Magnetic Fields—released their second album at long last this week in the US. Titled Hyacinths & Thistles, the 14 track set was produced from 1996 through 1998—finished before The Magnetic Field’s epic 69 Love Songs project got underway.
Hyacinths & Thistles follows the formula of its predecessor, Wasp’s Nest: compositions by Merrit, vocals by an eclectic cavalcade of innovative singers. This time guests include Marc Almond (ex Soft Cell), Liz Cox (Combustible Edison), Sarah Cracknell (St. Etienne), Neil Hannon (The Devine Comedy), Miho Hatori (Cibo Matto), Momus (aka Nicolas Currie), Bob Mould (ex Hüsker Dü), Gary Numan, Odetta, Sally Timms (The Mekons), Katherine Whalen (Squirrel Nut Zippers), and others.
The Magnetic Fields, in the mean time, performed this past weekend at Seattle’s Bumbershoot festival. Merrit is in New York working on soundtracks for no fewer than four film projects including James Bolton’s Eban And Charley, and Steve Cantos’ Endsville. | The 6ths | | The Magnetic Fields | | bio | | discography | | sample | | CD | | top of page |
