Garageband.com wins Wammy for New Talent Website 25 September 2000 Jerry Harrisons Garageband.com beat Universal Music Groups Farmclub, Atomic Pop, SpinRecords, and MusicChoice for the Best New Talent Website award. Harrison, who founded Garageband.com a year ago, played with The Modern Lovers and Talking Heads before venturing out as a producer. He, Tom Zito, and Amanda Lathroum Welsh created Garageband.com to leverage the accessibility of the Internet for the benefit of emerging artists. Bands post songs on the site. Then fans and other bands vote on the songs. Winnersalong with any bands hand-picked by Harrisonget recording contracts. Vivendi-owned Universal Music Group quickly stole the idea and formed Farmclub.com, which debuted earlier this year. Dreamworks followed suit with DreamworksDigital. Other winners at the Wammys included Napster for Website Of The Year and Best Music Application, the Steven Spielberg/Jeffrey Katzenberg/David Geffen owned Dreamworksrecords.com for Best Indie Label Website, and Eminem for the Listen.com Most Downloaded Artist. | Garageband.com | | Wammy Awards | | top of page | |
