Beth Custer at ChangeMusic SF 2000
18 September 2000

Beth Custer has traversed the musical landscape with projects in experimental jazz (Club Foot Orchestra) ethno/ambient (Trance Mission), experimental orchestral (Vinculum Symphony), trip-hop (Eighty Mile Beach), and most recently in cross-over jazz/ambient/latino/rock (as Beth Custer). She performed with her new quintet Saturday night at San Francisco’s Storyville jazz club during the CMJ ChangeMusic SF 2000 festival, where an intimate setting provided a lucky few with a close up glimpse of Custer’s poetic and dreamy Muse—dreamy as in pleasant, exciting, confusing, threatening, morphing.
The band features Jan Jackson on drums (he was also in Eighty Mile Beach), Kenny Harris on bass, Hugo Goday on percussion, David Metzner on guitar, and Custer on voice, piano, and clarinets. They’ll play in Santa Barbara on 14 October and in Palo Alto on the 21st, with tentative plans for a US tour beginning to take shape.
Custer released Doña Luz 30 Besos on City Of Tribes in July, and Vinculum Symphony Live on BC Records earlier this year. Vinculum Symphony is a Custer composition for a 20 piece chamber orchestra along with ten experimental instrument builders performing on their inventions. The piece, commissioned by the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble, debuted over four days in September of last year at the Yerba Buena Center For The Arts. | Beth Custer | | review (Aug 1999) from SF Bay Guardian | | discography | | sample | | CD | | top of page |
