Persephone’s Bees at ChangeMusic SF 2000

Berkely based experimental pop quartet Persephone’s Bees played a headline slot this weekend at the CMJ ChangeMusic festival at the Café Du Nord club, part of an Amazing Grease records showcase. The band combine a truly twisted musical aesthetic (try cocktail lounge/cabaret vocals—in Russian—against an in-your-face psychedelic blues attack) with jaw dropping musical technique. During their set I found myself thinking it’s lucky these fuckers are wielding instruments not weapons. Oh yes... then there’s Angelina Moysov’s hypnotic gaze, ingenuous voice, and slow motion Twin Peaksesque gyrations to really do your head in.
