2000 Mercury Music Prize goes to Badly Drawn Boy
13 September 2000

Earlier today 30 year old Manchester techno artist Badly Drawn Boy (Damon Gough) beat Coldplay, Leftfield, Death In Vegas, and some other press favorites to win the Technics 2000 Mercury Music Prize. Besides an assured boost in sales and the burden of impossible expectations for his next album, Gough walked away with a £20,000 (US$28,000) check.
The Prize is the UK’s most prestigious music award, now in its fourth year. The multi-month judgement process employs an independent panel to first name the twelve best UK albums of the year and then select from them the one best.
Upon winning Gough said “I am not calling myself a winner—I'm just someone put up here to shake like a leaf... It seems fickle to say but I do not know how to make a song. I’m not like Lauryn Hill saying it’s a gift from God. I’ll go home tomorrow and I can’t write for toffee... I’m never getting any better than when I was 18 years old. I still worry about the next level but I thrive on it. I want to go on to the next album and on to the tenth.”
This year’s dozen nominees included Richard Ashcroft—Alone With Everybody, Badly Drawn Boy—The Hour Of Bewilderbeast, Coldplay—Parachutes, MJ Cole—Sincere, Death In Vegas—The Contino Sessions, The Delgados—The Great Eastern, Doves—Lost Souls, Helicopter Girl—How To Steal The World, Leftfield—Rhythm & Stealth, Nicholas Maw—Violin Concerto, Nitin Sawhney—Beyond Skin, and Kathryn Williams—Little Black Numbers.
UK broadcast channel BBC2 will present a replay of the awards at 5:15 pm BST this Saturday. The show includes live music from all nominees.
The limited edition Mercury 2000 Compilation CD remains available through this month and will be deleted in early October. It contains one song from each of the nominated albums, along with a bonus track from last year’s winner Talvin Singh. Badly Drawn Boy’s The Hour Of Bewilderbeast finally sees US release on 3 October. | BBC story | | Mercury Music Prize | | Mercury Prize CD | | Badly Drawn Boy | | bio | | discography | | CD | | top of page |
