Chicago born rock/pop composer, arranger, producer, and performer Bernard 'Jack' Nitzsche, who traced a career influencing the course of music and culture for nearly 40 years, died at age 63 one week ago (25 August) of a heart attack at the Queen Of Angels hospital in Hollywood.
Nitzsche broke onto the pop landscape in 1963 with the top 40 instrumental hit The Lonely Surfer, which featured Leon Russel on piano and Glen Campbell on guitar—both studio musicians at the time. He worked with The Rolling Stones, Sonny Bono, The Buffalo Springfield, Tim Buckley, PJ Proby, Jackie De Shannon, Miles Davis, and Neil Young among others. He was also a member of Crazy Horse, who often play as Young’s backing band.
Nitzsche contributed to dozens of film soundtracks including The Exorcist, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, Performance, 9 1/2 Weeks, Blue Collar, and Hardcore. He received Academy Award nominations in 1975 and 1982, but never won. | NME story | | Billboard story | | top of page |
