1/3 of US colleges ban Napster
1 September 2000

The Gartner Group disclosed yesterday that more than one third of the US universities surveyed recently had banned the use of the music swapping software Napster. Napster CEO Hank Barry promptly responded by pointing out that roughly two thirds of universities don’t ban his product.
As the courts deal with the question of whether or not to shut down the tiny San Mateo, California startup, US schools are drafting new policies governing use of the Napster software. Whether or not they’ve blocked it, schools don’t want to be held liable for potential copyright infringing behavior of their students.
Gartner also released an estimate that music file swapping can consume up to 75% of a university’s network bandwidth. Barry wisely refrained from pointing out that 25% of network bandwidth is still available for university-related use. | BBC story | | Napster | | RIAA legal page | | top of page |
