Portable MP3 recorders due next year
6 October 2000

Swiss electronics firm Micronas has announced a new chipset, to be available in quantity for under US$12 each, that will be used in small, cheap, portable MP3 recorders. Using such devices, available next year, you’ll be able to record to the less-than-CD quality MP3 (MPEG I, layer 3) digital audio format directly from CD or DVD players, or from microphones, without the use of a computer or the Internet. You can transfer the recorded MP3 files to a computer or play them back on any portable MP3 player that uses flash memory cards.
The chipset, MAS 3587F, supports recording in MP3, AAC, and a variety of other formats. To build a recording device based on the MAS 3587F requires only memory and a controller chip, along with a power source (such as two AA batteries), so the devices can be very small and inexpensive. | Micronas | | press release | | top of page |
