Napster for the Mac available now with Mac-only features
26 October 2000

Yesterday Napster, Inc. announced the availability of the first version of Napster for the Mac. Founder Shawn Fanning said “Napster for the Mac provides the total Napster experience wrapped in a Mac-friendly user interface. In response to specific suggestions from our users, we've even included a few new features not yet available for the PC.”
Napster software is the most successful of a genre of Internet based file sharing tools that ease trading—or illegal copying in some cases, should the court rule that way—of MP3 (MPEG I layer 3) music files among Web users.
If you’re a Mac user who hasn’t just popped into this dimension, you know about (and probably use) Macster, which has provided basic Napster access on Mac OS. Napster purchased Macster earlier this year, and it was the Macster team that developed the new product. Your existing Macster user name and password will work with Napster for the Mac.
New features available only in the Mac version include search history, customizable views, dockable chat windows, and drag-and-drop support.
By the way, I don’t (and won’t) use Napster because I believe it violates copyright, because I think the sound of MP3 files sucks, and because file transfer times using Napster are often very long... but the copyright issue is the killer. I can tell from the music samples available on CDnow, Amazon, and artist/label Web sites whether or not I want to buy a single or an album. Send us your opinion and we might post it. | Napster for the Mac | | Rockbites feedback | | top of page |
