Amnesty International’s email campaign success
25 October 2000

Amnesty International’s new email based Stop The Torture campaign, begun last Wednesday and on which we first reported two weeks ago, has scored its first success. On the 18th they posted their first 'Urgent Action' case—on persons seeking assylum in Lebanon. The next day Lebanon responded.
AI said on Friday “We had an outstanding success: within 24 hours the Lebanese IT Department of the Presidential Palace contacted us saying they were being bombarded with emails and could we please stop. Over 2000 users have signed the petition, sending emails to the Lebanese government telling them that another person is concerned and aware of the situation.”
The London based human rights organization has conducted successful letter writing campaigns to stop torture for nearly 40 years. Their new Web based campaign allows notification, participation, and response much more quickly. Persons in danger of or in the midst of torture have no time for snail mail.
Amnesty has sponsored many musical events over the years including The Secret Policeman’s Ball series in the ’80s, the 1998 Paris concert honoring the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and last year’s Eurythmics reunion tour. | Stop The Torture | | Amnesty International | | Paris concert DVD (includes 3  Radiohead songs) | | top of page |
