US indie festivals next month: Terrastock IV and IMF
17 October 2000

The first week of November sees two major indie music festivals in the US, the Independent Music Festival in Hoboken, New Jersey and Terrastock in Seattle, Washington. Created and run entirely separately, each happens to be in its fourth edition.
New Jersey’s Independent Music Festival grew out of Doug Forbes’ Stop And Smell The Locals organization which he founded in 1997 to help revive the Hoboken scene. Starting with the April 2000 festival the IMF opened its doors to national acts and now hosts more than 100 bands.
The upcoming festival runs 1-4 November in ten Hoboken venues. Some of the artists playing are American Standard, Ex-Models, The Hissyfits, Ivet, Land Speed Record, Plug Spark Sanjay, and Prosolar Mechanics. The IMF Web site offers a generous helping of full-length MP3 music files by participating bands, past and present.
Terrastock IV takes place 3-5 November in Seattle. Previous editions of Terrstock were held in Providence (1997), San Francisco (1998), and London (1999). The annual event is organized and sponsored by the psychedelic-oriented Ptolemaic Terrascope magazine based in Melksham, Wiltshire, England. “Terrastock” is apparently an assembly of the magazine name, in turn derived from Captain Beefheart’s song Tarotplane, and the upstate New York town name Woodstock now associated with the 1969 festival.
Terrastock IV features 32 bands all performing at The Showbox in downtown Seattle, with full details available on the site. Some of the artists playing that we’ve heard of (and you might have as well) are Bardo Pond, The Bevis Frond, Martyn Bates (of Eyeless in Gaza), Ghost, The Minus Five, Subarachnoid Space, and Moe Tucker (ex Velvet Underground).
