16 October 2000

The National Film Board of Canada production Salt, directed by four 17-year-old female high school students with CDN$200,000 backing and the help of a professional crew, is a four part montage exploring youth culture through its own eyes. Themes include education, non-mainstream music, self-mutilation, and the Montréal punk community.
Co-director Amber Goodwyn named the film after watching a salt truck clear snow from the roads: “That’s us! We’re melting away stereotypes about ourselves and other kids.”
Goodwyn attends the Moving In New Directions (MIND) high school in Montréal along with co-directors Morgan Gage, Karen Shamy-Smith, and Beverly Brown. They worked with supervising director Louise Leroux of the NFB.
Musical artists featured in Salt include Hole/Smashing Pumpkins bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur, Canadian singer/songwriter Julie Doiron, The Ripcordz, and others. Salt premieres Wednesday 18 October at Cinema Parallèle in Montréal, after which The Ripcordz and Julie Doiron play an all-ages show at L’X.
Salt will see additional screenings this week in Québec and Newfoundland, with details available on the NFB site. You can buy the film now on video directly from the NFB, with ordering info available on the site. | Salt at National Film Board of Canada | | Julie Doiron | | top of page |
