Amnesty International’s campaign against torture
13 October 2000

London based human rights organization Amnesty International—which has sponsored many musical events over the years (Ah... a music tie-in!) including The Secret Policeman’s Ball series in the ’80s, the 1998 Paris concert honoring the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and last year’s Eurythmics reunion tour—launches a year long global Stop The Torture campaign on Wednesday 18 October.
Amnesty has already put up the stoptorture.org Web site, on which you can sign up today. Officially launching next week, the site will facilitate mass emailings to authorities responsible for torture around the world, using the power of the Internet to expand on Amnesty’s highly successful tradition of letter writing campaigns. It works by notifying members, by email or mobile phone, about specific instances of individuals being tortured or being in imminent danger of torture. Members then reply using pre-written emails or by composing their own messages. Amnesty’s site collects the replies and forwards them to the appropriate authorities.
Also on the 18th Amnesty will mark a variety of buildings and public facilities worldwide as Torture Free Zones by wrapping them with yellow and black 'TFZ' tape. TFZ sites will include locations in Japan, Kenya, Lebanon, England, and Argentina. At the same time the group will hold public demonstrations around the world with speakers including Chilean MP Isabel Allende, Argentinian MP and torture victim Dr. Alfredo Bravo, Tibetan torture victims Gaden Tashi and Kalsang Palmo, Ugandan commissioner for prisons Joseph Etima, Lebanese singer and composer Marcel Khalifa, Secretary General of Amnesty International Pierre Sane, Dr. Duncan Frost of the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture, and many others. | Stop The Torture | | Amnesty International | | Paris concert DVD (includes 3  Radiohead songs) | | press release | | top of page |
