Berlin’s City Slang announces Free MP3 club
3 November 2000

Berlin, Germany based City Slang records has inaugurated a new, free club through which they’re giving away a previously unreleased or rare music track in MP3 (MPEG I layer 3) format each month. You give them your email address and they send you a password for the current month’s release.
For November 2000 it’s an acoustic version of Crystal Frontier by Tuscon based Calexico (Joey Burns and John Convertino from Giant Sand), a song based on the novel of the same name by Carlos Fuentes.
The label says they’ll limit downloads each month to the first 3,000 who try—and previous months’ tracks will not be available. As for reposting of the tracks on Napster, City Slang freely acknowledges it will happen but invites club members to be 'one of the chosen few' who can be first to post. Addressing Napster Inc. directly, City Slang’s blurb gives the company an unceremonious if amusing 'fuck off.'
The next three free MP3s will be from Death Cab For Cutie, Empire State, and Jen Wood. | City Slang records | | top of page |
