Witness launches new site, posts new documentary video 21 November 2000 with an expanded training section including online manuals on using video equipment to promote human rights. Theyve also just posted a new video reportintroduced by actress Winona Ryderexposing the prostitution slave trade in Nepal, Bangladesh, and India. The United Nations estimates that four million people are trafficked against their will worldwide each year for forced labor. Ryder notes The majority of them are women and young girls, many of whom are sold into slavery as sex workers. Forced prostitution is a multi-billion dollar industry in India. Lured with food, then forced to work as prostitutes under threat of torture and death, girls as young as 13 and even younger are subject to repeated rape and experience severe psychological damage. They also face almost certain exposure to the HIV virus. Those who survive return to a life of shame, being rejected by their home villages. Witness is calling on everyone to write to their governments head of state urging signing of the Protocol on Trafficking in the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime. For more information see the Act Now section on the Witness Rights Alert on their Web site, or check our links. | Witness | | Act Now information | | UN Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime | | top of page | |
