Coldplay touring world on strength of Yellow
21 November 2000

London romantic pop quartet Coldplay, whose debut LP Parachutes shot to number one in the UK and was for a time the favorite to win this year’s prestigious UK Mercury Music Prize, have been riding the train from indie buzz (on the Fierce Panda label) to international superstardom powered by their stunning song Yellow. Which is a shame from the selfish perspective of not wanting a great piece of pop music totally ruined by commercialization and overplay, but there you go.
The song has been added to the playlists of radio stations across the US, and now US television network ABC has announced they’ll use it as the theme for all their promotional commercials starting this Thursday and running through Christmas. Call the doctor.
Coldplay have been touring continental Europe this month, and head to Scandinavia next Wednesday before a few shows in Germany and then Scotland. They’ve postponed their New Zealand and Australia debut tour from later this month until January, and are planning a first North American outing for February. More details as we get them.
