Fred Frith plays US and France
13 November 2000

Former members of English avant-gardists Henry Cow and The Art Bears, Fred Frith (guitar, violin) and Chris Cutler (drums), perform tonight in San Francisco at the Great American Music Hall with Tom Dimuzio and Beth Custer. The quartet play a second show this Sunday in Los Angeles at The Knitting Factory.
Cutler and Frith recently collaborated on the largely improvisational album Two Gentlemen In Verona, released this past spring on RER/Recommended. And Frith composed and produced the avant-garde jazz composition Traffic Continues which he performed with Ensemble Modern, released in June.
Frith, who now teaches at Mills College in northern California and is widely regarded as one of the more innovative composers and guitarists in recent history, confirmed last night in an interview on Berkely station KPFA that his only formal musical training consisted of childhood violin lessons—although he holds a non-music degree from Cambridge University.
On 12 January Frith performs a solo evening at Sons d’Hiver in Paris, and the next night performs Traffic Continues with Ensemble Modern, also at Sons d’Hiver. | Fred Frith | | bio | | discography | | sample from Two Gentlemen In Verona | | CD | | top of page |
