Silver Jews’ David Berman’s advice to grads
5 May 2000

David Berman, singer and songwriter for lo-fi/alt-country band Silver Jews, will deliver the commencement address to his alma mater St. Johns College in Annapolis, Maryland on 13 May. Selected for the address over Harvard biologist Stephen Jay Gould, Berman said “My father always told me I’d never make it without a middle name. This should shut him up.”
Berman says his address to the graduates will revolve around three points: "Sleep on your back, ash in your shoes, and always use the old sense of the word...."
He released his first book of poetry in 1999, Actual Air, to widespread acclaim. On the musical front he recently replaced all the members in his band, and sacked (so he says) longtime collaborator and Pavement front man Steven Malkmus. (Malkmus has coincidentally also dropped Pavement for the foreseeable future.) Berman is writing songs for a new Silver Jews album tentatively titled Bright Flight, due later this year. | Silver Jews (unofficial) | | bio | | discography | | sample from American Water | | top of page |
