Robert Smith working on solo album
30 May 2000
In March, front man for The Cure Robert Smith told Reuter’s News Service he plans to break up the band: “I just feel that it would be good to stop while we’re still good. I don’t really want to taint the legacy of what I’ve done with the first 20 years of my adult life by continuing on [just] because that’s what I do. And also, I think if I don’t try something else now, I never will.”
Calling the impending breakup just a rumor, NME now says that Smith recently told reporters that he’s working on a solo album. “It’s not the kind of album that’ll be played a lot on radio. [The songs] are not verse-chorus-verse-chorus.”
Sounding unmistakably disingenuous, a spokesperson for Polydor records said “These rumors about the band splitting always circulate... we’ll have to just wait and see.” | NME story | | discography | | sample | | top of page |
