BBC to cover 60 hours of Glastonbury Fest live
30 May 2000
This year the Glastonbury Festival—the UK’s longest running summer music event—will be televised, and on the radio, and Webcast. The BBC has arranged to provide more than 60 hours of live coverage over BBC2, Radio 1, and their digital channel BBC Choice. Coverage will be comprehensive save for occassional gaps, according to their news release.
Following tradition, the Glastonbury artist lineup remains a closely guarded secret except for the headliners. This year they are David Bowie, The Chemical Brothers, and Travis.
Co-founder 64 year old Michael Eavis has kept the festival independent since he started it with his wife in 1970. Last year he told the BBC “We don’t let sponsorship impinge on the integrity of the festival at all. I’ve been offered millions—but if we needed it on that scale I’d rather not do the festival. It’s about bringing people together, it’s about artistic achievement and the whole youth culture of Britain. You can’t put a label on all of that talent. You can’t brand it. It would be the kiss of death for me.” | BBC story | | Glastonbury Festival | | BBC Radio 1 feed | | top of page |
