Jello Biafra found liable for Dead Kennedys back pay
22 May 2000
In one of the more ironic moments of punk music’s aftermath, a San Francisco court has ruled and specified damages in the long standing dispute between Jello Biafra (Eric Boucher) and former Dead Kennedys bandmates East Bay Ray (Ray Pepperell), Klaus Flouride (Geoffrey Lyall) and D.H. Peligro. Ending years of out of court wrangling, the court ordered Biafra to pay his former bandmates US$220,000 for back royalties and damages. The initial dispute was for $76,000 of royalty money.
The court also awarded Biafra $5,000 to be paid him by Ray for mismanaging the Decay Music business partnership.
Flouride told reporters afterward “We didn’t want it to get this far. We weren’t out to get Biafra at all.” Ray said “He just needed to talk to us, and remember we did the band together.”
Biafra said “They’re punishing me for sticking to the principles of the band and underground, independent culture... This is the ugliest thing that’s ever happened to me.” | NME story | | SF Chronicle story | | discography | | top of page |
