Icelandic composer and singer Björk (Björk Gudmundsdóttir) won the Best Actress award on Sunday at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival for her role as Selma in the Danish film Dancer In the Dark. Speaking to reporters, she said “I don’t want to be an actress... When I said yes I knew that it would be not only my first role but also my last one, and I am very happy that this experience was the one.”
Björk’s surprise win followed vocal criticism and outright insults by some critics. The film itself beat 22 other entries to win the 2000 Palm D’Or (Golden Palm) award.
