No Clash reunion for Dury memorial/benefit

Perhaps wishing to defuse a growing buzz about a Clash reunion, former Clash front man Joe Strummer last week dropped his plans to play the 16 June memorial/benefit for UK punk/pop icon Ian Dury. Dury died of cancer in March at age 57, survived by a wife and four children. The London tribute concert will benefit the British charity for which Dury was the spokesperson, CancerBACUP.
A spokesperson for the benefit show spoke to LiveDaily about the change in plans. “I think [Strummer] may be sensitive about people getting the wrong idea that the Clash are to reform and doesn’t want people buying tickets for the wrong reasons. It’s a real disappointment as Joe was a major part of the bill. I know Ian Dury would have liked him to have participated.”
Former Clash members Mick Jones and Topper Headon still plan to play separately at the event. Other reports, now known to be false rumors, held that former Clash bassist Paul Simonon would also play. | Live Daily story | | Ian Dury (unofficial) | | CancerBACUP | | discography | | top of page |
