16 May 2000

Today in the US, New York experimental noise rockers Sonic Youth released their 15th album NYC Ghosts & Flowers, the full length follow up to 1998’s 1000 Leaves. The new LP sees release in the UK on 22 May. SY begin the first of a set of tours on 9 June in Minneapolis, playing with Chicago based musician/sound guru Jim O’Rourke.
Front man Thurston Moore wrote about the album “It is eight songs and all of 42-minutes long. The music was produced by radical non-sleeper Jim O'Rourke and intermittently features his slicing PowerBook software actions. The songs are based on visions of shared color and greyscale meditation...
“The cover art is a painting by the late, great seer William S. Burroughs entitled X-Ray Man—there is also imagery by the late NYC poet/illustrator Joe Brainard, the late American poet Mystic D.A. Levy (the subject of the song Small Flowers Crack Concrete), Dan Graham, Lee Ranaldo, and Kim Gordon (these last three still extant in human guise).
“The group with Jim O'Rourke will tour the world this summer playing this music plus earlier (and possibly future) sounds.” | tour dates | | Sonic Youth (coming soon) | | discography | | sample from Goodbye 20th Century | | CD | | top of page |
