New Witness Rights Alert features Michael Stipe
12 May 2000

Michael Stipe, front man for alternative icons R.E.M., narrates a Witness Rights Alert video now available online. The video describes a recent massacre in a Guatemalan Indian village by the Civil Patrol in which 250 persons—100 of them children—were killed.
Every two weeks Winess and Oddcast post new sound and video clips focusing on a single issue, with introduction and explanation by film and music celebrities including Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel, Angélique Kidjo, and Tim Robbins. A forthcoming video will be narrated by avant-gardist Laurie Anderson.
Other stories now online expose the constitutionally ratified murder of civilians by the military in India, torture and poisoning of students by state police under white rule in South Africa, international forced prostitution rings managed by the Russian mafia, and children in active military duty in Uganda.
Peter Gabriel founded Witness with the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights and the Reebok Foundation to provide video equipment to human rights activists to help expose abuses and ensure justice around the world. | CDnow allstar story | | Witness Rights Alert | | Witness | | discography | | sample | | top of page |
