Beth Orton, on tour, takes Brit award in stride 8 March 2000 English singer/songwriter Beth Orton did not expect to win the Brit award last week for Best British Female Solo Artist. She beat Beverley Knight, Gabrielle, Geri Halliwell, and Melanie C—demonstrating that the Brits can look beyond commercial dominance when choosing winners. Speaking to Billboard, Orton said simply “...I hadn’t been waiting for it.” She is touring Europe with long time collaborator Beck, who also won a Brit. Their last show together will be at Le Zenith in Paris on the 29th of this month. Orton continues for one more show at Dublin’s Olympia Theatre on the 31st.
