London based Asian dance fusionists Joi, winners of the 1999 BBC Asian Music award, traveled back to Bangladesh on Friday for a four performance tour that finishes up today at the IEB Auditorium in Chittagong. On Saturday they played a show in Dhaka as Joi Soundsystem (pre-recorded mixes) to benefit Bengali street children. On their live dates they’ve been joined by Stone Roses guitarist Aziz Ibrahim.
Joi formed as a duo of brothers Haroon and Farook Shamsher nearly ten years ago in their adopted home of London’s east end. Haroon died suddently this past July. A number of artists performed at a tribute ceremony, including Paul Daley (Leftfield), Talvin Singh, Paul Hartnoll (Orbital), Jason Pierce (Spiritualized), Alex Patterson (The Orb), DJ Ritu & Spring Heel Jack, and many others. Farook has continued the band, which opened last year on the European leg of Eurythmics’ Greenpeace/Amnesty International benefit tour.
Joi are working on the follow-up to their 1999 debut One And One Is One. They’ll play a single London show this month on the 25th at the EC1 Fabric.
In tribute to Haroon, Astralwerks posted a 40 minute mix set by Joi Soundsystem in RealAudio—not available elsewhere—recorded just before he passed. | Joi | | Haroon Shamsher tribute | | bio | | discography | | sample | | top of page |
