Ofra Hazas death sparks AIDS debate in Israel 5 March 2000 Israeli fusion singer Ofra Haza apparently died of complications from AIDS, HaAretz newspaper reported last week. While the story is unconfirmed, few are challenging it. Rather, the topic of AIDS, which has been strictly taboo in Israel, is suddenly on everyones minds and lips. AIDS is now the hot subject on Israeli radio talk shows. Health advocates say that Haza could have performed a valuable public service by speaking out before she died. The BBC reports that some doctors have questioned whether she may have avoided treatment out of fear of exposure. | BBC story | | bio | | discography | | sample | | top of page | |
