Ian Dury dies at age 57 after years fighting cancer
27 March 2000
English singer/songwriter and punk/pop icon Ian Dury died on Monday of cancer at age 57, surrounded by family. He had battled the disease for several years. Dury is survived by his wife Sophie and their children aged three and five, and by two children from a previous marriage.
Dury remained active until recently, even playing last year’s Glastonbury festival. He was presented with a Gold Badge award in 1999 by the British Academy of Composers & Songwriters.
Last May he spoke to the BBC about his illness: “I don't spend a lot of time shaking my fist at the moon. It doesn’t make you feel any better I’m sure, plus 50% of any battle you’re in is your spirit, be that battle against cancer, polio, hunger, whatever.” | NME story | | discography | | top of page |
