South Park theme to broach censorship issue at Oscars
23 March 2000

Composer Mark Shaiman spoke to the press about the nomination of Blame Canada—from the film South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut—for an Oscar award on Sunday for Best Song. The song is the theme for the South Park feature film Bigger, Longer & Uncut. Following tradition, the song will be performed—sort of. Shaiman said “It’s a song about censorship from a movie about censorship, so the irony is not lost on any of us that we’re being asked to censor the song.”
Shaiman wrote the song with South Park co-creator Trey Parker. It was performed for the movie soundtrack by voice actress Mary Kay Bergman, who tragically committed suicide at age 38 in November.
Actor and comedian Robin Williams will perform the song on Sunday. The song’s subversive nature is highlighted by its competition: You’ll Be In My Heart, from the movie Tarzan (performed by Phil Collins); the theme from Music Of My Heart (performed by Gloria Estefan and ’N Sync); Save Me, from the movie Magnolia (performed by Aimee Mann); and When She Loved Me, from the animated feature Toy Story 2 (performed by Randy Newman and Sarah McLachlan). | BBC story | | Beef-Cake.com | | sample | | CD | | top of page |
