Songs For Summer is a various artists collection assembled to honor the memory of Summer Brannin, a San Diego college student and artist who died in 1998 of untreatable kidney cancer just months after her diagnosis. Proceeds go to the LA based charity Free Arts For Abused Children, which “...recruits, trains, and places volunteers to work hands-on with victims of abuse [using] dance, drama, writing, music, painting and other avenues of creativity [to] encourage children to channel emotions, release anger, and develop positive methods of communication.”
Several tracks on the album are previously unreleased or rare. The play order is Where’s Summer B (Ben Folds Five), Song For Her (Jason Faulkner), True Dreams of Witchin’ (Soul Coughing), Indian Summer (The Jazz Butcher), Brief Candles (The Posies), Midsummer (Babacar), In The Aeroplane Over The Sea (Neutral Milk Hotel), All Along The Frying Pan (Squirrel Nut Zippers), Funky Cold Medina (The Frank & Walters), Summer (Beasley), The Summer You Let Your Hair Grow Out (Pansy Division), Summer Of Love (The B-52s), After The Beach (Sandycoates), Rhyme For The Summertime (G Love), and That Summer Feeling (Jonathan Richman).
Songs For Summer is due 21 March in the US. | Songs For Summer | | Free Arts For Abused Children | | CD | | top of page |
