Global merger: Vivendi swallows Seagram
20 June 2000
Canadian conglomerate Seagram—which among other things owns big-five entertainment monolith Universal Music Group (parent of Polygram, Geffen, A&M, Island, Motown, Mercury, and many other labels) and partners with Viacom (who own MTV, SonicNet, Addicted to Noise, VH1, etc.)—has just been swallowed by bigger fish Vivendi of France for US$34 billion.
Vivendi simultaneously purchased French television company Canal Plus. The combined entertainment death star weighs in with a worth of roughly US$100 billion. Their Orwellian slogan is 'committed to meeting your life’s ever-changing needs.' | BBC story | | Vivendi | | Seagram | | top of page |
