CNET launches music technology & information site
13 June 2000

San Francisco based online news source CNET this week announced the launch of CNET Music Center. The new Web site provides product guides, tutorials on emerging music technologies, opinion, music tech news, and search portals for Web radio and MP3 files. The site is easy to navigate and in most cases provides accurate information.
Unfortunately but predictably, the CNET site propogates the myth that MP3 files sound nearly as good as CDs, describing MP3 as “...a file format that compresses standard audio tracks into much smaller sizes without significantly compromising sound quality.” Not to take anything away from the benefits of MP3’s convenience (we use ’em), we know better and don’t want to be a party to the quality myth.
The organizations behind the myth, not coincidentally, all gain from it—including the German research lab Frauhofer IIS-A which co-developed the MPEG I, layer 3 format that has since been dubbed MP3. Independent subjective-quality research on MP3 is hard to find. Please tell us about any you know of. | CNET Music Center | | MPEG audio info page (links to technical info) | | top of page |
