Posthumous Ian Dury album in the works
12 June 2000

A spokeman for East Central One, the UK record company holding publication rights for the late Ian Dury, has announced they may release a posthumous album. “There are 10 or 11 tracks floating about. Hopefully they will be released at some point, but it is up to Ian’s family as to whether they see the light of day...
“I have heard them all and I can honestly say they are all very good.” All the tracks feature Dury on vocals, and none has been previously released.
Dury was best known as leader of early ’80s punk/pop band The Blockheads. Since then he continued to compose and perform, but also became an activist with UNICEF in their campaign to eliminate polio, the childhood disease which left him crippled. He died of cancer in March at age 57, survived by a wife and four children. Dury remained active until recently, even playing last year’s Glastonbury festival. He was presented with a Gold Badge award in 1999 by the British Academy of Composers & Songwriters.
On Friday there will be a Dury memorial concert in London (which sold out the day it was announced) featuring Kirsty MacColl, Madness, Robbie Williams, former Clash members Mick Jones and Topper Headon (playing separately), and Dury’s former backing band. | BBC story | | discography | | top of page |
